Madonna Still Hopes To Provide Ray Of Light In Malawi

Madonna In Malawi

Madonna founded the charity after having been required to put something back into the Malawian community rather than, as she was accused by many detractors, simply using the country to shop for designer accessory babies.

Madonna’s charity in Malawi, Raising Malawi, has been found to be somewhat lacking in, well, charity after having wasted US $3.8 million on a school which will never be built.

Madonna founded the charity after having been required to put something back into the Malawian community rather than, as she was accused by many detractors, simply using the country to shop for designer accessory babies. The notion of an international celebrity helping one child out while leaving the rest of the country’s orphans to languish in abject poverty seemed a step beyond the pail so Madonna set up a charity, supported by all her showbiz chums, to provide schooling, accommodation and healthcare for the country’s most needy children.

However, the managers and administrators of the millions which were flowing into the charity’s coffers found other areas in which to spend the money and now the charity’s academy for girls will never be built.

In October Raising Malawi’s executive director, one Phillipe van den Bossche, (who, aside form counting his previous experience as “Director of Philanthropy” under the company of “Madonna” seems to have very little other experience other than being the partner of Madonna’s former trainer. No, really, that’s it) stepped down after criticism of his management and the money which was being spent on such expenditure as exorbitant salaries, cars, offices and membership of a golf course. It also went on free housing and a car with driver, according to an investigation carried out by the NYT.

The board of directors has now been removed from the charity and replaced by a board that includes Madonna herself and her manager. The announcement that the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls which as well as being supported by Hollywood A listers was also in receipt of funds from Madonna’s Kabbalah co-members was a surprise to Malawian officials back in January and a great upset to the villagers who had had to give up their homes to be cleared in advance of the construction work on a site of 117 acres near Lilongwe, Malawi’s capital.

Once the project was clearly in trouble Madonna, who’s reported to have given $11 million dollars of her own money to the scheme asked the Global Philanthropy Group to look into matters for her. The report that they published was critical not only of van der Bossche but Anjimile Oponyo, who was supposed to have been head of the school. They criticeised van der Bossche’s oversight of both the building works and the curriculum which was to be used in the academy. Global Philanthropy said in their report that van der Bossche’s “level of mismanagement and lack of oversight was extreme in both aspects of the project and the lack of success of the players on the ground is in large part a result of his inability to effectively manage project plans, people and finances.”

When it came to Oponyo, they were no less harsh saying: “Her charisma masks a lack of substantive knowledge of the practical application of educational development, and her weak management skills are a major contributor to the current financial and programmatic chaos."

Much of the money which was ‘spent’ went on architects, designers, salaries and cars for employees who have still yet to be appointed. Trevor Nelson, who’s founder of Global Philanthropy Group said that despite the money having been disposed of, the project “had not broken down, there was no title on the land… there was a startling lack of accountability on the part of the management team [in both Malawi and the United States].

“We have yet to determine exactly what happened to that $3.8 million. We have not accounted for the funds that were used.”

The building of the school had been thought to be scheduled for December this yearbut there could be further delays as the villagers who’ve already lost their homes are in dispute with Raising Malawi claiming that they have received insufficient remuneration for the land where the school is to be built.

Madonna is insisting that the plans are still all to go ahead, even if not in the form she had originally imagined. Now the mother of two Malawian children adopted under media scrutiny and controvercy said that: "There's a real education crisis in Malawi.

"Sixty-seven per cent of girls don't go to secondary school, and this is simply unacceptable. Our team is going to work hard to address this in every way we can."

Michael Berg was more pragmatic. He’s the co-director of the Kabbalah Centre and also co-founder of Raising Malawi. He stated to the charity’s contributors that: “[A] decision has been made to discontinue plans for the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls, as it was originally conceived."

In January Madonna said that, undaunted, she would look at building secondary schools throughout the county so that she could give education to thousands, not just hundreds of girls. Nelson is now administrating for the charity told the Associated Press that they would be: “expanding the ability for a group of nonprofits to provide education to more kids. Madonna had concerns about the effectiveness and management team and has made sweeping changes in order to better serve more children.” He also confirmed that the Kabbalah Centre no longer has dealings with Raising Malawi.

The school, as planned would have cost $15 million to build and would have been available for 400 students. The Malawian officials responded to the original criticism by saying that they were stunned and maintaining that Madonna was blaming them for the breakdowns because she had been unable to provide the money which she had promised to them.

Ms Oponyo made a statement that she wasn’t able to talk about her work in the foundation and the claims of mismanagement, the accusations of an ‘extravagant’ remuneration package which included a car and driver and membership of a golf club. van der Bossche is also gagged as Madonna is fabled for her non-disclosure clauses in any contracts that she has with her employees.

No Fault Celeb Car Crash Compensation Cases

So, is the incidence of car crash exits among celebs greater than that in the population as a whole? Probably yes, as most of them seem to have been boozed/coked/doped up at the time and filled with the certainty of immortality and self importance that only celebrity and drugs can imbue.

Motor accidents are not an uncommon sight and armies of online “no win no fee” solicitors actively encourage people to seek out compensation, usually as a result of whiplash injury. Rubberneckers among us are nonetheless intrigued to check out car accidents in places where a celebrity was involved. If the collision was fatal, so much the better! Many celebs of course have had near misses.

Lindsay Lohan has been involved in a number of automobile incidents that allegedly (at least according to ABC News) were fuelled by cocaine. Country & Western vocalist LeAnn Rimes was questioned by the LAPD for a potential hit-and-run in August 2009. Even the “Mandela of the Movies”, Morgan Freeman, had a near death car accident in 2008. His vehicle careered off the highway and rescuers had to cut him free and airlift him to hospital. Freeman’s passenger even initiated a compensation claim against him.

So, is the incidence of car crash exits among celebs greater than that in the population as a whole? Probably yes, as most of them seem to have been boozed/coked/doped up at the time and filled with the certainty of immortality and self importance that only celebrity and drugs can imbue.

In the world of art, Jackson Pollock (variously described as a genius or an infantile moron by some critics) fits the template with his alcohol-related, single car crash on August 11th 1956, but there do appear to have been some notable exceptions where death at the wheel was genuinely tragic and not the celeb’s fault.

Jackson Pollock

Grace Kelly

Grace Kelly

Grace Kelly’s life was nothing short of a fairytale but one with an unhappy ending. One of Hollywood’s hottest movie stars of the 1950s, she packed all that in age 26 and married Prince Rainier III to become Princess Grace of Monaco. On September 13th 1982, she was driving home to Monaco when she suffered a stroke and lost control of her car. She was critically injured and died a day later only 52 years old.

Diana

Diana

The most obvious princess to meet her maker in a Mercedes. Princess Diana’s life was a whirlwind of media scrutiny and her refusal to conform to the “typical royal role” won fans and irritated the establishment in equal measure. Her death (and that of her companion Dodi al-Fayed) at the age of 36 on August 31st 1997 lead to a very un-British outpouring of emotion for the “people’s princess”. It’s estimated that 2.5 billion people worldwide watched the broadcast of Diana’s funeral on September 6th 1997.

James Dean

James Dean

On the afternoon of September 30th 1955, “Rebel Without a Cause” star Dean was driving his silver 550 Spyder at what was his usual high speed. As he approached the intersection of U.S. Route 466 and State Route 41 a coupe driven by a 23-year-old college student crossed in front of Dean’s convertible. The resulting collision claimed the life of one of Hollywood’s most promising young actors. Although he had only three major motion pictures to his name, his untimely death elevated him to cult status.

Q

Q

Desmond Llewelyn, the man who played “Q", in most of the Bond films (the same role most recently taken on by John Cleese) was the fellow who provided Bond with all his neat gadgets. Llewelyn was 86 in 1999 when his car crashed head-on into another vehicle near the village of Berwick, about half way between Lewes and Polegate, in East Sussex. Although the other driver survived, Desmond succumbed to injuries in hospital.

Marc Bolan

Marc Brown

T-Rex front man died on 16th September 1977, just two weeks before his 30th birthday. He was a passenger in a purple Mini 1275 GT driven by his girlfriend Gloria Jones. She lost control of the car and wrapped it round a tree near Gipsy Lane on Queens Ride, Barnes in southwest London. Bolan died instantly. Fans quickly turned the site of the crash into a shrine festooned with ribbons and pictures and in 2007 the site was officially recognised with a plinth and statue.

Celebs & Why Hair Surgery is Preferable to the Piece

Let’s take a look at the unfortunate examples of toupees that public people were forced to suffer through, and us with them.

The vast majority of men suffer with hair loss at some point in their lives and it tends to be a traumatic experience. It’s a symbol of a man’s waning virility (at least men take it that way) and there are limited options on what one can do to control the process, or cure it.

On the upside ‘times they are a changing’ and hair transplant operations are now far more effective than ever before – something that some celebrities could have made use of years ago. Let’s take a look at the unfortunate examples of toupees that public people were forced to suffer through, and us with them.

Marv Albert

"The voice of basketball", was a legendary sports reporter who made it into the Basketball Hall of Fame and won an Emmy, amongst other laurels. Despite the sexual scandal in the 90’s (after all who hasn’t been in one of those) Marv was incredibly popular, one reason for this may have been his awesome hair piece which seemed to be made from a living creature with which he had cut a deal.

Chuck Norris

He doesn’t need Twitter, he’s already following you! But it may be simply to ask you some quality hair care questions because the legendary action star could defiantly use some advice on the subject. It’s pretty clear that all those round house kicks left Chuck without a sense of subtlety and his toupee causes about as much pain as a boot in the eye.

John Travolta

You may be able to tell by the way he walks that he’s a ladies man but mega star Travolta certainly isn’t the guru when it comes to follicle fashion. Since it’s well known that he’s almost as bald as a baby, the fact that he selected a toupee that would make Chewbacca feel ashamed probably wasn’t the best move.

Nicholas Cage

A recent interview with the gods of several religions revealed that they had no idea what Nick was thinking when he acquired this piece. Scientists have suggested is more than likely composed of a mutated bear from the Jurassic period which was preserved in something that a tyrannosaurus left on the sidewalk.

Dick Weiss

A 2008 Hernia round table discussion became infamous due to the appearance of a mostly unknown New York Daily writer who was arguably in possession of the worst toupee of all time. Columnist Dick Weiss was roasted in forums for months due to a hair piece so emotionally disturbing that it sky rocketed him above every major celebrity in the biz. It has been said that the image has caused several religious groups to declare that the ‘End Times’ were in progress.

When considering what to do about your own hair loss it may be a better idea to take a page from Sir Elton John, who cleverly made use of hair surgery to correct his ailing hairline.

The Top 5 Bizarre Celebrity eBay Auctions

This isn’t even the weirdest celebrity item to have made it on to eBay – here are my five favourite bizarre A List auctions to date

A lock from the barnet of high pitched pop darling Justin Beiber was recently sold on auction website eBay.com for an astonishing $40,668 which was donated to the Gentle Barn charity which exists to provide sanctuary to abused farm animals.

Although this is ridiculous (at least in my humble opinion), it is hardly surprising given how popular he and his mane have become over the last year or so – Beiber is now the second most followed person on micro blogging platform Twitter (Lady Gaga is currently in poll position).

This isn’t even the weirdest celebrity item to have made it on to eBay – here are my five favourite bizarre A List auctions to date...

Brangelina’s jar of breath:

SOLD FOR: $523

Even though this is the auction didn’t fetch a huge amount of money, it makes the list for simply proving that some people are so stupid that they will literally pay significant amounts for nothing. Celebrity spotter Joe Wilson put the jar of Angelina Jolie’s and Brad Pitt’s “exhaled air” on the renowned auction site with the following description:

"Be the first to own this jar of Celebrity air, which may contain air molecules that came in direct contact with Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.”

Unfortunately, I cannot find any word on who won the auction or what they planned to with their prize. I am assuming this is because they have been placed in a mental asylum for their own and our safety!

Scarlett Johansson’s boogers:

SOLD FOR: $5,300

OK, so it wasn’t the boogers of actress Scarlett Johansson which were sold on eBay in 2008 but rather a tissue that she blew her nose into during a stint on the Jay Leno chat show. All of the proceeds were kindly donated to the USA Harvest Charity whose aim it is to feed the less fortunate. Not sure I would be hungry after hearing where the (admittedly kind but gross) donation stemmed from however. Eugh!

Justin Timberlake’s French toast:

SOLD FOR: $3,154

The sexy back, ex N-sync star undertook a breakfast interview with a radio station in New York back in 2009 and when it was over, the presenter decided to sell the remains of the pop singer’s French toast that the artist had been munching through before the start of the interview. The winner of the auction proudly declared that she planned to freeze dry the toast and then store it in her dresser drawer. OK then, you great big FREAK!

Gary Coleman’s sweatpants

SOLD FOR: $500

What could most people do with a pair of GAP-Kids sweatpants belonging to 4ft 8” television actor Gary Coleman? Not a lot, so it was surprising when they appeared to fetch a staggering $400,000 online. The winning bidder never did come forward to pay for their prize and so they were sold to the next highest winning bidder – none other than talk show host Jimmy Kimmel who had bid $500 (a slight difference, eh?)

The star also listed his GameCube games console back in 2007 though it is unclear whether this was also to raise money for his much needed kidney dialysis (this was the reason he had auctioned his beloved sweats). The pants may have raised quite a bit more money if they were to be listed now since Coleman sadly passed away in May last year.

William Shatner’s kidney stone

SOLD FOR: £25,000

The Star Trek actor sold the cause of his excruciating lower abdominal pain to an online casino in the year of ’06 in order to raise money for a housing charity. The stone was so large that Captain Kirk told the media is was “you will want to wear it on your finger.” It was initially taken away after the operation but Shatner begged the hospital to give it back so he could sell it.

The stone now belongs to GoldenPalace.com who also own a toasted cheese sandwich emblazoned with the face of the Virgin Mary that cost them £28,000. I’m not sure you would gamble such large amounts of money on the latter!

Celebrities and Sunglasses Trends for 2011

THE must have styles for ‘11 include oversized frames, printed designs and retro shapes such as the 50s “cat eye” variety once popularised by icon Audrey Hepburn.

The sun might not have fully put its hat on in 2011 yet but that has not stopped the A List from showcasing the sunglasses trends that were hot on the catwalk earlier on in the year. In case you do not know, THE must have styles for ‘11 include oversized frames, printed designs and retro shapes such as the 50s “cat eye” variety once popularised by icon Audrey Hepburn.

Universally flattering, oversized, butterfly shaped sunnies have donned the faces of many famous individuals recently including pop starlet Rihanna, socialite Kim Kardashian, actress Nicole Ritchie and heiress Paris Hilton. Although the Prada PR18IS (with an RRP of £140) version of these glasses have proved popular with many ladies of high social stature, the rest of us will probably have to wait for discount fashion stores such as the infamous Primark to catch up with the trend once the summer season sets in!

Rounded, oversized sunglasses have also recently been favoured by the likes of ex-Spice Girl Posh, Disney sweetheart Miley Cyrus and British models Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell, that latter of which has been chosen as the face of Dolce and Gabbana’s latest shades collection. Appropriately named Animalier, the collection integrates many animal prints into the oversized eyewear movement. Floral printed sunnies are a little “last year” but still favourable with the rich and famous – actress Jessica Alba was recently snapped with a set perched upon her nose.

Large, stripy eye protection meanwhile has also proved a hit, with the fashionably eccentric Marina Diamandis (of the band Marina and the Diamonds) pulling the look off exceptionally well in London recently with her circular, Lennon-esque white a red striped pair (though she has also owns an identical pair in turquoise blue). Hopefully we will see more celebrities experimenting with brightly coloured shades in the wake of this fashion success!

Cat eye glasses – which are wider at the top than they are at the bottom – have been a recent favourite of actress Scarlett Johannson and pop tarts Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. Miu Miu’s retro eyewear collection was also well received when it was revealed on the runways of Paris Fashion Week just seven days ago.

Whatever style of sunglasses you decided to choose, be sure to remember one thing; this year, sunglasses are a key accessory to have fun with! If you are usually too much of a wallflower to don extravagant lenses, then a festival is the perfect time to let go of your fashion inhibitions! You should also remember that confidence is vital to pulling off a quirky accessory or outfit.

Kat Morris works as a prescription sunglasses technician by day in which her specialty lies in repairing and reconditioning Ray Ban Wayfarer glasses. Kat loves reading celebrity rags and penning guest blogs outside of working hours.

The Weirdest Dresses Popstars Love

I'm endlessly interested in people who choose their clothes with a mind to making them as in your face as possible. I guess the wilder your wardrobe, the more likely it is that you'll stick in people's minds - that's what the world's popstars seem to think anyway.

As much as I want people to think I look nice, I have to say that most of the time I dress to please myself rather than everyone else. That means nice skinny jeans with a bit of stretch, soft swishy dresses that don't cinch in too much at the waist and the occasional cute t-shirt. Obviously, I want to look good for work too, and there's nothing quite like getting dolled up for a night out, but I'm definitely all about cloths being right for me and less bothered about how much of a lasting impression they make on other people.

That said, I'm endlessly interested in people who choose their clothes with a mind to making them as in your face as possible. I guess the wilder your wardrobe, the more likely it is that you'll stick in people's minds - that's what the world's popstars seem to think anyway.

When I think about weird dresses, there's one that ALWAYS springs to mind first, and that's the crazy swan get up Bjork wore on the Oscars red carpet back in 2001. It was a pretty crazy looking dress, and a bit more like a fancy dress costume than a evening gown, but it got her talked about plenty - and I think there's something appealing about it, in a kooky kind of way.

Then there's Madonna, she's worn some pretty interesting ensembles over the years, from her 80s spatkly legwarms and crucifixes to the zips and corsets of the last few years. The get up she wore to a gala at the MoMA in 2009 may not be the weirdest dress she's been in, but the fact she's in her 50s now and still wearing that kind of stuff earn her my respect.

And that brings me along nicely to Cher, whose crazy dresses and catsuits have entertained me greatly over the years. She's another performer who is all about reinventing herself, so I guess it's only inevitable that some of her dresses might get a little, well, weird from time to time.

But it's not just the older stars who can be a little eccentric when it comes to their dresses, just think about Katy Perry and the firework dress she wore for a Victoria Secrets show. However, when we're talking weird, there are few people who can hold a candle to Lady Gaga right now. A dress made out of raw meat? That's dedication to the cause. What cause exactly, I'm not sure, but it definitely tops my list of weird dresses.

These sassy female popstars may have reminded be it is possible to be as weird and wonderful as you want when it comes to your clothes. But I think I'll stick with my own collection of dresses, I don't have legions of fans to please or newspapers to shock after all!

The Celebrity Accessory That Money Can't Buy

Celebrities seem to live in a world where everybody they meet is so obsequious and eager to fawn over them that they forget that they are just everyday people who happen to have one talent which they’ve exploited successfully

Britney’s had one, Mariah’s had one, Even Margot Kidder’s had one (Lois Lane from the Superman movies, keep up) Michael Jackson seemed to live in a constant one and now Charlie Sheen has had his Celebrity Meltdown too.

I won’t bore you with all the details here, you can catch Mr Sheen doing his thing just about anywhere you like, that’s not the point. The point is that celebrities seem to live in a world where everybody they meet is so obsequious and eager to fawn over them that they forget that they are just everyday people who happen to have one talent which they’ve exploited successfully.

Justin Bieber recently expounded his views on pre-marital relationships, same sex relationships and planned parenthood. He’s a callow teenage boy who’s been brought up as a Christian and hot-housed into stardom by his parents; what does he know about anything? And yet, because of his celebrity status people convince themselves into believing that they care what he thinks. The last teenage opinion maker of any real note was Joan of Arc, and look what happened to her.

So when the rich and shameful go on their rants they come from an environment where people hang on their every word and no-one contradicts them. Mel Gibson has been learning some lessons in what the real world is all about recently, he blames his upbringing as if that’s a mitigating circumstance and it transpires that his drink driving outburst wasn’t the first time that he’s expressed his views on Hebrew culture and political influence.

John Galliano is now persona non grata for getting wrecked in Paris and ragging on people he thought were Jewish. Christian Dior spent no time thinking about their decision to cut him loose when the allegations of hate speech and racial abuse came out notwithstanding that he claimed to have been provoked and the police failed to charge him. He’s apologised now and appears to be working with the Anti Defamation League to turn the situation around and rehabilitate himself.

Unfortunately for them, stars are also the victims of their own success, people love to watch a car crash, it’s an evolution thing. If we’re scared of it we watch it very carefully so that it can’t take us by surprise. When it comes to a celebrity wigging out we watch because we’re familiar with their hyper reality, when things go wrong for them it causes a certain degree of weltschmertz, clearly something we naturally averse to.

The problem is that while we are watching them drive their lives into a brick wall with their foot firmly on the accelerator is that they are so accustomed to mass attention that they think they are actually achieving success. Sheen went on TV raving about The Charlie Sheen drug, tigerblood and winning and achieved a million followers on Twitter; he also lost his million dollar per episode contract on Two and a Half Men but now he has his own online channel through which he can talk directly to his fans not realising they’re gawpers who are simply rubbernecking.

And he’ll keep on doing it well after the first flush of ‘success’ because he’s a performer. That’s the tragedy, he thinks people are watching him to support him because that’s the only kind of feedback he’s ever had. As he continues to mug up for the cameras he’ll destroy himself and reputation making worse and worse mistakes as he gets more desperate. Look at Dustin Diamond making a frankly skin crawlingly embarrassing ‘sex’ tape, failing miserably and still floating it thinking it would boost his career, not realizing it took him from being a has-been to a WTF? With nothing in between.

Dan Cash writes on various issues of contemporary culture. In other news, he has a wide collection of wigs and also has a disconcertingly large number of fancy dress outfits, not limited to halloween costume ideas.

What's Mad Men All About?

Mad Men is a popular American TV series, created and produced by Matthew Weiner. The series premiered on AMC in July 2007 and completed its forth series at the end of October last year

Mad Men is a popular American TV series, created and produced by Matthew Weiner. The series premiered on AMC in July 2007 and completed its forth series at the end of October last year. The forth series of Mad Men is now available on DVD and contains 13 episodes.
The series is set at the fictional Madison Avenue advertising agency Sterling Cooper which is located in New York City, although later on in the story the firm moves to the newly established Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce.

The series focuses on Don Draper, played by Jon Ham, who is a creative directory at Sterling Cooper and eventually a founding partner at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce. The series revolves around his life, both in the office and outside of, paying particular attention to the moods and attitudes of 1960s America.

The series has been well received with critics and has won many awards, including most famously thirteen Emmys and four Golden Globes. Mad Men was also the first basic cable series to be awarded with the Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama series, a rare feat which it managed to procure in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

For those interested in taking a look back at what American life was like in 1960s America, there is no greater introduction and insight than Mad Men. Smoking, driving, sexism, feminism, adultery and racism are all major themes throughout the series, all of which are touched on quite strong.

Smoking for example, which was commonly accepted in the United States during the 60s when it was set is seen from a very casual viewpoint - nearly all of the characters smoke, and it isn't often that there isn't someone smoking a cigarette on screen. Lucky Strike is also featured within the pilot episode and discussion centres on a new article from Reader's Digest which has suggested that smoking may lead to various diseases including lung cancer.

The first season of Mad Men attracted 900,000 viewers although this figure soon doubled during the second season which was heavily promoted. According to data from Nielsen Media, 1.75 million viewers watched the Sunday night's season finale. In total, the cumulative audience for the three airings of the episode on that night was just under three million people.

Product placement was a huge feature within the series, fittingly since the series focused on a marketing firm. Heineken, Cadillac, Gilette, American Airlines and Clearasil are all featured within the series, while retro commercials for Dove, Vaseline, Hellman's and Suave were all used to promote the fourth season of the series.

The DVD for Season 4 of Man Men will be released on March 28th this year.
